In the news, picketers from around the country are protesting the wealthy. Social Services and other programs are in jeopardy as the governments, both federal and state, are scrambling to eliminate programs; but we rarely hear anything about the middle class. I wonder if there is a middle class left in our society. Consider this:
16% of adults in America provide care both emotionally and financially to a family member.
53% of families don’t think they will have enough money for a comfortable retirement, and many of those are not counting on Social Security.
34% of the head of households over age 50 are without any savings for retirement.
75% of us are living paycheck to paycheck
Scary, isn’t it? Maybe our government should try to focus on the middle class: people who make a decent living, but not enough to really take care of themselves; those of us who have worked hard and have not gotten a hand out and will may end up with serious financial setbacks as we age. Perhaps the government can offer incentives to those of us who can save just a bit, so we do not become a burden to society. This is my 2 cents. What do you think?
